Irrigation System Maintenance
Irrigation systems are designed to provide you an efficient way to give your landscape the proper amount of water that it requires. Like all others aspects of your landscaping, your irrigation also requires regular maintenance. Poorly maintained systems can lead to wasted watering that never reaches your plants or damage to your landscape from over watering.
Common Issues
At the Box
Some of the most basic issues that need to be maintained are dates and times, back-up batteries and wiring. Both the current date and time and the days and times that the irrigation system should be watering need to be updated after power outages, time changes and season changes. Wiring should be checked for weather damage.
In and On the Ground
Each section of the irrigation system should be checked for leaks, clogs and misalignments. Freezing weather, tree roots, accidental shovel damage and aging are just some of the things that can cause pipes to leak or break. Sprinkler heads get clogged with dirt and leaves; they sink down into the ground and can get knocked out of place by lawn mowers. All of these things can cause flooding, wasted water from run-off and lack of water to other areas in the yard.
Maintenance
At the very minimum an irrigation system should be checked out at the beginning of each season and again about halfway through it. It is recommended that a system be checked at least once a month. At that time the watering schedule should be updated and each area of the system should be run to check for leaks and spraying problems. By checking the system on a more frequent you are able to prevent small easily fixed problems from becoming expensive yard damaging and water wasting problems.
